Millie - Military Macaw
Millie joined our flock on 11 February 2023.Her hatch date was 11 June 2022. I had wanted a Military Macaw for ages - nearly as much as I want a Palm Cockatoo! Military Macaws at first glance are a green bird. Wrong! They have so many different tones of green, sky blue, red, and yellow They are indeed very beautiful birds.
Having decided I was going to get one, the problems started. I searched all rescues I could find, I then moved onto breeders. Unfortunately I again drew a blank. Eventually , with the help of a third party I found one. It was a hand reared baby and was ready at just the right time. The only problem was it was in Spain. Still, after all the formalities had been completed she was legally imported and made available. As with all new birds, she was put in quarantine. This was a good thing because one of her blood tests came back positive for PBFD. We then went on to get two more tests, both of which were negative so we took the best of three. False positives are quite common so we were happy to take the best of three. After that Millie was found to be a girl and was then introduced to the flock. |
Millie Goes on Holiday!
Millie was trained very quickly to accept a harness although she does chew it from time to time. She got used to coming out for our afternoon walks very quickly and even reacted very well to strangers holding her. We soon came to our 6 week holiday in Weymouth. We decided 6 weeks was plenty long enough to undo a lot of the good we had done so the decision was made to take her with us. Read all about our 6 week holiday in Kenny’s blog.
