Coco - Major Mitchells CockatooCoco the male Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo joined our flock on 27 November 2022. He was hatched in August 2016. We do not know the date so in time honoured tradition we will assume 27th. He was owned by an elderly couple who just weren’t getting on with him so he came to live as part of our flock. He is not hand tame which is our target for winter 23/24. Major Mitchell’s originate from inland Australia where they nest in pairs in trees and other areas. They are found across the arid and semi-arid inland areas of South Australia.
Coco has settled down very well so far, passed all his quarantine disease tests and has become a lovely addition to the flock. He seems to have a bit of a fear towards skin, possibly feeling less stable if elderly people had some shakes when handling him so this is our first step to building his confidence. We are hoping to build his confidence to enjoy the outside world over time as well. Coco isn't very noisy and has high pitched vocal sounds and will hiss to tell you off but he is one of the quieter species of cockatoo to have in the home. |
Coco and Ruby Meet
Major Mitchells are a similar size and build to the Roseatte or Galah Cockatoo as can be seen in the photograph of Coco sitting alongside Ruby, my Galah. He, like Ruby, is not particularly noisy and if we can harness train him, I see him coming out and about with us.
